Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development trend of the digital economy and the restructuring of the industrial sector in Vietnam during the period 2005–2024. Drawing on secondary data obtained from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam and the World Bank, this study constructs the Digital Economy Development Index using the Entropy method, based on a set of indicators that capture digital infrastructure, digital connectivity, and technology-related resources. The degree of industrial restructuring is examined through the Theil index, which measures the dispersion of labor productivity across industrial subsectors. The findings indicate that Vietnam’s digital economy experienced rapid development over the 2000–2024 period, as reflected in the Digital Economy Development Index reaching 0.93 in 2024. In parallel, the structure of the industrial sector underwent a notable shift, characterized by a declining share of the mining and quarrying sector and the increasing role of the manufacturing sector. The industrial Theil index decreased from 0.706 to 0.232, suggesting that labor productivity disparities across industrial subsectors tended to narrow over time.
